My neighbor has a big garden…

I drive by and say “Yes! You go, neighbor!”

But… I can’t help being a Garden Critic.

Because there’s something he did “wrong”.

Can you spot his big garden mistake?

The Untrained Gardener Eye will see nothing wrong.

Me?

With my X-Ray Garden Vision, I see a very common mistake.

It’s common because modern day gardeners just focus on what THEY wanna grow. 

They focus on how THEY wanna grow it.

They don’t take feedback from Mother Nature.

And they don’t think how Nature might destroy their “perfect” plan.

The Mistake:

The garden shown above is placed on a steep hillside.

You can’t see it well in the picture, but it slopes VERY sharply towards the road (where I took the picture from).

The way the gardens are currently placed will lead to:

-Soil erosion
-Nutrient loss
-And wilted plants in times of drought 

And drought has been a BIG deal in Colorado the past few years.

So, it would have been wise to change up HOW this garden was organized.

Here’s what I’d do differently:

As you can see, my profession is Gardener (not Artist).

Anyway. Here’s what I did:

I switched the orientation of the beds from up/down to side-to-side. 

This would harvest rain water from the steep hill.

Flood water would be captured.

That water would be retained for the summer droughts.

Simple. 

This would mean:
-Better harvests

-Less fertilizing
-Happier, stronger plants
-Faster growing plants.

All with one simple change.

Obviously changing this AFTER the fact would be near impossible.

That’s why it’s so important to KNOW what to do… before you do it.
