Last night, I was scrolling garden forums and struck Garden Comedy gold…
Some gardener was explaining how he ripens green tomatoes at season’s end.
His advice?
Tell your tomato plant:
“Give rise to your progeny you dumbazz!”
I nearly spit out my tea laughing.
Because the funny this is – he’s 100% right.
THE “STUPID TOMATO” STORY:
See, tomatoes are tropical perennials.
Tomatoes actually started out as tiny little berries in the Andes mountains of Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia.
Then the Aztecs started breeding and cultivating them over multiple generations to make big, juicy, and delicious tomatoes.
In fact, it’s the same process they used to turn a piece of grass with a small seed head into… corn.
In their original habitat, tomatoes just keep growing forever.
No hurry to make babies (seed).
No urgency.
That’s why when you grow tomatoes in the US of A, winter hits ‘em like a freight train.
Unless you’re a hardcore tomato lover, and started them under grow lights back in February…
Your plants freeze with dozens of green tomatoes still hanging there.
All that potential sauce, salsa, and slices just… gone.
Unless of course you like fried green tomatoes.
Meh.
Instead, try this:
Stress the plant a little.
-Cut back water.
-Chop the new leaves.
-Pinch the suckers.
-Even trim the roots with a shovel.
Suddenly Mr. Tomato Head panics and thinks:
“Ruh Roh! I better make seeds before I die!”
And those green tomatoes turn red in days.
It’s like magic.
Naturally, this got me thinking about a deeper truth:
The more you understand what Nature is trying to accomplish, the easier gardening becomes.
Every plant has a mission.
Every microbe has a job.
Every earthworm is working toward something.
When you understand their goals, you help them succeed.
And when they succeed?
You reap the reward (AKA an amazing harvest).
Keep growing,
James~
P.S. Speaking of understanding Nature….
Most gardeners fight against Nature instead of working with her.
They wonder why their plants struggle, and they can’t get ahead…
Meanwhile, their soil stays DEAD!
Here’s what I’ve learned after a couple decades of studying Nature’s
systems:
Your soil is trying to become something amazing.
It WANTS to transform into black gold teeming with life.
